Sustainability

Our land has been nourishing communities since the 12th century, and we aim to ensure it continues to do so for many centuries to come through our annual tree planting, protection of remnant native bush areas, wetland restorations and contribution to regional biodiversity corridors.

Our products are sustainably and ethically 100% kiwi made.

We produce high quality meat, wool and milk with care for our people, animals, environment and community.

  • Palliser Ridge has been Land to Market accredited since 2021; our regenerative farming practises are monitored and assessed by Ata Land under the Ecological Outcome Verification programme (EOV).
  • All our wool meets the Responsible Wool Standard.
  • We are FAP+ accredited.
  • Palliser Ridge was the Ballance Farm Environment Awards Supreme Winner for the Greater Wellington Region in 2019.

Our Environmental Vision is to leave the land we farm and the water courses that run through it, enriched.

Planting

  • Every year since 2001 we have planted 500 poplar or willow poles to help stabilise our steeper country and provide shade & shelter for livestock.
  • At least one shelter belt is planted every year using locally sourced native tree and plant species.  These shelter belts provide animal welfare benefits by reducing exposure to wind-run, shelter from rain & shade in the dry summer months. They also enhance bio-diversity, especially by providing a food source.

Regenerating native bush

  • Remnant native bush areas, normally steep gullies, have been fenced off to exclude stock thereby allowing regeneration of the native bush.  In-fill planting, using eco sourced native trees, eg, Ngaio, Karaka, Southern Rata & Totara, have accelerated the regeneration.
  • A Totara woodlot, comprising some 300 trees, has already been planted in a retired gully, and further woodlots are planned.  This is the definition of a long-term environmental project, given Totara trees take at least 300 years to approach maturity!

Biodiversity corridors

  • Our work is forming part of a wider community project to link the Aorangi Forest Park with the Remutaka Forest Park via secure bio-diversity “corridors” of indigenous flora & fauna.
  • These corridors are fenced to exclude grazing stock and predator control within the corridors will reduce damage to native flora and provide a safer habitat for native fauna, in all, a boost for bio-diversity.

Wetlands

  • We have restored or constructed at least one wetland a year and plan to continue this programme.  Sites in low-lying, boggy areas, particularly in steep gullies with minor water-courses, are selected for retirement.
  • We are committed supporters of the Wairio Wetlands restoration project on the eastern shores of Lake Wairarapa.
